New featherweight computer to be launched

The world's first ultra-personal computer, representing a new PC category that could transform personal computing the same way the cellphone has revolutionised telecommunications was shown at Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference 2002.

A little-known San Francisco company, OQO, revealed a 'modular' computer that crams processor, memory, battery and storage into a package the size of a paperback novel. OQO's first product is a highly functional and versatile handheld wireless computer that easily becomes a notebook or desktop PC. It measures just 12,4 cm by 7,4 cm by 2,3 cm and weighs less than 255 grams. The Ultra-Personal Computer is a full-function computer running Microsoft Windows XP Professional and incorporating up to a 1 GHz Crusoe TM5800 processor; 10 cm super bright VGA colour LCD; Synaptics touchscreen; 256 MB onboard RAM; 10 GB hard drive; 1394 FireWire, USB, audio, OQO-link connectors; and 802.11b and Bluetooth wireless networking.

When inserted into a special enclosure, it becomes a notebook PC. When placed in a cradle with a standard screen and keyboard, it functions as a desktop PC.
