LCD driver reproduces up to 65 000 colours
8 May 2002
Opto-Electronics
Samsung Electronics' new STN-LCD driver IC is claimed to reproduce about 250 times more colours than the 256-colour models currently used on mobile phones. It measures 177 COM (commons) by 144 SEG (segments) (the size units for super twisted nematic LCD modules). Unlike other devices, Samsung has built both the common driver and segment driver onto a single chip. It can be programmed to reproduce 256, 4096 or 65 000 colours. In addition, the device uses multiple-line selection (MLS) to transmit data from more than one data line at a time, quadrupling processing speed while reducing power consumption by some 60%. With online multimedia functions of mobile phones continuing to expand, the global colour mobile phone market is expected to surge to 180 million units a year by 2003, according to Samsung.
