Products for free space data communications

22 May 2002 Opto-Electronics

Hamamatsu Photonics has recently released several new ranges of products specially developed for free space data communications applications.

For short distance data links (over several metres), Hamamatsu has introduced the P8212 module, including high speed IR LED and large area photodiode receiver. Applications using this approach are becoming commonplace and range from inter-vehicle communication systems (VICS system in Japan), to automatic warehousing, to 'live' point of sale systems, to remote connection of computer network peripherals. Other high power/high speed LEDs and LED arrays, together with appropriate large area photodiodes and photo IC receivers, from Hamamatsu, are suitable for LAN, Ethernet, IEE1394, and other data transmission protocols.

For longer distance data transmission (up to several km) Hamamatsu are now supplying a new range of Silicon APD receiver modules (series C6018 and C5658), together with high power laser diode products working in the near infrared at 920 nm and 980 nm.
