Scope probes deliver high signal fidelity for increasingly complex signal analysis

22 May 2002 Test & Measurement

Tektronix is offering two new oscilloscope probes and accessories for the acquisition and analysis of high-speed signals in computer, communications and advanced electronics.

Today's design engineers face a host of unique signal integrity challenges - including a critical need for an active probe with bandwidth performance beyond 4 GHz - that must be addressed during the development of advanced digital technologies. Tektronix' P7260 active oscilloscope probe uses IBM's silicon germanium (SiGe) technology, to allow engineers to make high-speed measurements quickly and efficiently, and providing a greater level of insight into signal behaviour with maximum signal fidelity.

"With the introduction of these probes and accessories, combined with our high-performance oscilloscopes, including the world's-fastest, the TDS6604 digital storage oscilloscope (DSO), Tektronix demonstrates its leadership and commitment to providing unrivalled signal fidelity in measurement systems," said Colin Shepard, vice president, Oscilloscope Products, Tektronix. "Since signal analysis is only as good as the quality of the acquired signal, Tektronix delivers products with the best fidelity available so our customers can tackle today's signal integrity issues with confidence in their measurement system."

With SiGe technology, the P7260 active probe has 6 GHz bandwidth and less than 75 picoseconds (ps) rise time capability. It features a toggle-switch that offers customers the choice of using the probe with a dynamic range of 6 V peak-to-peak with 25X attenuation or at 1,5 Vp-p with 5X attenuation with increased sensitivity. Input capacitance <0,5 pF, the lowest input C spec in the world for this type of probe, ensures minimum loading of the signal for the most accurate acquisition.

Accessories

Tektronix also has available the PPM100 Probe Positioner - a general-purpose hands-free benchtop probing aid. It uses 3-axis control that holds a probe in a desired position. This tool is available with either a high-mass base or a clamp.

A buffer amplifier is also offered that expands oscilloscope functionality. The TCA-1MEG high-impedance buffer amplifier system adds selectable input coupling, selectable bandwidth limit, and a 1 MW input to high-performance oscilloscopes. These additions provide access to an array of probes with bandwidth up to 500 MHz, including general-purpose passive probes, high-voltage probes (passive single-ended and active differential), microvolt differential probes, and current probes.

Modern high-speed measurement systems, having switchable 50 Ohm and 1 MOhm terminations on the same input path compromises signal fidelity. By providing the 1 MOhm path as an external accessory, the TCA-1MEG system eliminates a permanent degradation of the 50 Ohm signal path. It also allows users to easily and quickly configure each channel for the input characteristics required for the desired measurement. Maximum signal fidelity for signals greater than 500 MHz is maintained at the input by swapping the TCA-1MEG for a high-performance 50 Ohm adapter or other probing solution.

Tektronix' TekConnect interface helps ensure superior signal fidelity with useful bandpass up to 18 GHz at the oscilloscope input, while offering versatility through signal acquisition accessories for high-performance oscilloscopes. This robust interface enables multiGHz analog bandwidths, overcoming many of the inherent bandwidth limitations of BNC-based interfaces. The TekConnect interface preserves a low voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) 50 Ohm environment, as well as a reliable electrical connection. It has a convenient one-button release and locking mechanism. This provides quick, easy installation and removal of probes, amplifiers and adapters.
