Half-brick 100 W DC-DC converter can go as low as 1,08 V

22 May 2002 Power Electronics / Power Management

Artesyn Technologies has developed a half-brick 100 W DC-DC converter module suited for powering products employing the latest low-voltage semiconductors. Available with single 5,0 V, 3,3 V or 1,8 V outputs, the EXB100 converter is a high efficiency synchronous rectifier design that is capable of delivering very high output currents without the need for a heatsink.

The 5 V model is rated at 20 A, while the 3,3 V and 1,8 V models are rated at 30 A. Each of these models features a voltage trim facility with an exceptionally wide range, enabling the output to be adjusted between 60% and 110% of its nominal value. This means that the 1,8 V model, for example, can be trimmed down to just 1,08 V, yet still deliver its full 30 A rated output at this voltage level, says the manufacturer.

The ability to accommodate a wide range of output voltages with a single model provides users with significant advantages. System designers can perform margin testing - which is becoming increasingly important as operating voltages drop to around the 1 V level - simply by varying the supply voltage. Also, applications with highly specific voltage requirements can now be powered by standard off-the-shelf DC-DC converters, avoiding expensive customised sources.

Artesyn's EXB100 series converters are open-frame units intended for through-hole PCB mounting, with an industry-standard half-brick footprint of 61 x 58 mm, while height is just 10 mm. Operational temperatures are -40 to +90°C ambient, and are expressly designed as high reliability products, using very conservative component de-rating criteria.

Artesyn's EXB100 series DC-DC converters have a 1500 V d.c. isolation rating and carry a full set of international safety approvals. They meet all relevant standards for use in telecommunications equipment. With the addition of a few external filtering components, the EXB100 series can meet EN55022 level A&B standards for conducted noise emissions.
