Digital potentiometers for low-drift, low-noise precision applications

5 June 2002 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Analog Devices has introduced a new family of 15 V, 8-bit digital potentiometers that perform the same electronic adjustment function as mechanical potentiometers, trimmers or variable resistors. The four new products include the single and dual channel SPI-compatible AD5260 and AD5262 and the single and dual channel I2C-compatible AD5280 and AD5282. In addition, a four channel 256-position device that contains a pin-selectable SPI- or I2C-compatible interface is in development. All operate from a single 5 V to 15 V power supply (or dual ±5 V supplies), and typically consume less than 1 µA. Each features a 35 ppm/°C temperature coefficient for improved accuracy over the -40 to +85°C operating temperature range.

This family of digital potentiometers is designed for applications such as bar code scanners, check readers, security tagging systems, coin and bill changers, vending machines, medical, security and drug detection instrumentation, optical networking and wireless communications. Terminal resistance options include values of 20 kOhm, 50 kOhm and 200 kOhm. All are 3-wire, SPI-compatible with serial data inputs and outputs. Additional system power savings can be achieved by using an override shutdown feature.
