Power controller features 'breakthrough' standby power performance

In a move to advance its portfolio of power management integrated circuits, ON Semiconductor introduced the NCP1205, an innovative pulse width modulator (PWM) current-mode controller for high-voltage and off-line power conversion applications.

The NCP1205 specifically targets high-efficiency and low-power, standby applications requiring quiet EMI. A typical 30 W switchmode power supply built with the NCP1205, consumes less than 150 mW at high line (240 V a.c) and no load. It operates in true quasi-resonant (QR) valley switching mode and reduces its switching frequency when the output power demand decreases. These features naturally reduce EMI and turn-on losses, while improving power supply efficiency when in standby mode. Frequency reduction takes place without creating a 'singing' transformer. Designers can then reduce board costs by implementing inexpensive magnetic components - free of noise problems. It is available in PDIP-8 and PDIP-14 packages.
