IEEE-1394 serial bus I/O connectors

16 Feb 2000 Interconnection

The IEEE-1394 connector provides a simple I/O connection providing bandwidth needed for audio, imaging, video and other data streaming. This high-speed serial bus supports data transfer rates of 100, 200 and 400 Mbps.

The 1394 allows up to 1023 buses to be bridged together. Up to 63 devices can be supported on a single bus. No terminators are required and each device can be instantly connected ‘hot pluggable’ without turning off the device.

Molex has been leading the development and introduction of IEEE-1394 I/O connectors, providing the first compliant products to the market. Molex offers various SMT I/O header versions both flat mount and upright. Molex provides overmoulded cable assemblies in different lengths and latching version plus assembly which mates with standard I/O headers. It has also developed the 1394 AV connector which is intended for handheld battery-powered devices. The four circuit, AV version is smaller and lighter weight than the standard 1394. The Molex AV header features solder tabs to provide greater mechanical strength to the PCB without additional screw hold-downs. Molex offers a complete range of value-added cable assemblies for 1394 to 1394 connection, 1394 to 1394 AV transition and AV to AV connection.
