SST now offers lead-free (non-Pb) packaging for its SuperFlash-based products, an environmentally safe alternative to standard lead-based packaging options.
The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) is developing regulations requiring Japanese electronics manufacturers to eliminate lead from semiconductor products over the next several years. In an effort to align itself with the proposed JEITA regulations and ensure its environmentally conscious strategy meets customer requirements, SST solicited feedback on its lead-free packaging plans from over 20 Japanese companies, including leading system manufacturers Sony, Matsushita and Hitachi. The European Commission (EC) is also leading the lead-free movement by requiring the substitution of lead in electrical and electronic equipment by 1 January 2007.
By removing lead from electronic products, environmentally sensitive OEMs will help reduce the amount of lead that can spread from electronics scrap into the groundwater supply.
SST, in addition, supports the elimination of toxic substances in all of its products by complying with the Montreal Protocol and the US Clean Air Act, whereby CFCs and HCFCs are not used in the manufacturing processes of SST or of its subcontractors. SST's lead-free products can be visually identified by an 'E' suffix.
