Power management devices deliver 'smart' solutions

31 July 2002 Power Electronics / Power Management

Philips Semiconductors' expertise in managing power is well-known. The company offers state-of-the-art technologies for smart power management providing cost-effective, energy-saving solutions. With the increasing number of portable devices, it has been focusing on developing intelligent battery management for handheld products as well as compact and efficient power supply solutions to reduce consumption in mains operated equipment.

* AC power supplies

For AC supplies, the company's growing families of highly integrated solutions deliver flexible power performance. PowerMOS transistors can be used as a main switch in the power supply for the primary side, while Schottky diodes are ideal for secondary rectification. Philips' innovative STARplug devices can be used as complete power supply control switching for small loads. This line-up of focus products is completed by the company's comprehensive ZenBlock diode range that offers rugged performance in many AC supply applications. Key products are: SiliconMAX n-channel PowerMOS; Q-Trench PowerMOS; Schottky barrier rectifier diodes; STARplug SMPS controller ICs; ZenBlock diodes; Greenchip SMPS controller.

* DC power supplies

Intelligent power control of DC supplies is a major factor in many small appliances. A range of converters, smart power management ICs, Schottky diodes and highly efficient power semiconductors provide solutions for all voltage requirements. Key products here are: SiliconMAX n-channel PowerMOS; Q-Trench PowerMOS; Schottky barrier rectifier diodes.

* Battery management

Enabling smaller and lighter equipment and batteries, Philips Semiconductors' options give customers the flexibility they need to compete in a rapidly changing portable market. Products cover a spectrum of applications including handheld instruments, PDAs, portable computers, cameras, data-loggers, back-up power supplies and all popular types of rechargeable battery cells.

Key products are: DC/DC converters; battery power unit; fast charge ICs; and SiliconMAX n-channel PowerMOS.
