Tel-Tron Technologies has selected Atmel's AT86RF401U, the industry's first monolithic microcomputer and RF transmitter, for its line of wireless supervision devices. Tel-Tron Technologies, a manufacturer of life safety systems for senior living, offers wireless supervision transmitters that can easily initiate a call for help from anywhere within the senior living resident's apartment.
Citing the highly integrated and exceptional RF performance of the SmartRF Atmel AT86RF401U, Rick Dawson, president of Tel-Tron, commented: "The harmonic content of the board is wonderful. Second, third, and fourth harmonics are extremely low. With the knowledgeable and responsive technical support provided by Atmel, this project advanced from concept to functional prototypes, including software development and RF antenna design, in about six weeks."
Production prototypes submitted to a certified test lab demonstrated compliance to Part 15 of FCC's regulations governing the operation of a RF transmitter in the unlicensed ISM frequency bands. The AT86RF401 integrates a powerful 8-bit AVR microcontroller and a PLL-based RF transmitter on the same silicon chip.
Jim Goings, Atmel SmartRF Marketing Manager, commented: "This monolithic system enables the software control of features, such as automated VCO tuning and RF power attenuation that is not found on any other device on the market."
With this level of software-controlled feature content, says Atmel, the device is able to compensate for device tolerance both during assembly and in the field using self-tuning algorithms and in-system programming capabilities. These features, along with 2 KB of Flash program memory and 128 bytes of EEPROM data memory enable the engineer to quickly design a better performing product at a lower cost than today's discrete RF transmitters or multichip solutions.
Three different SmartRF devices (20-pin TSSOP package) are available including the AT86RF401U optimised for use at 315 MHz (US), the AT86RF401E for 434 MHz (Europe), and the AT86RF401X, which can be operated at any frequency from 250 MHz to 450 MHz.
