Rear-illuminated CCDs for biomedical/scientific use

Hamamatsu Photonics has released several new back-thinned CCDs for low light level, analytical and biomedical measurements. The mega pixel S8667-1010 is a FFT (full frame transfer) back-thinned CCD, with 100% fill factor and extremely high quantum efficiency - typ in excess of 50% in UV and near IR and >90% in visible range. Back-thinned CCDs are made by chemically etching the back side of a CCD so that electrons may penetrate to the potential wells created on the other side. This 1024 x 1024 element BT-CCD, has 18 µm pixel size, giving a total active region of almost 19 mm square. Can operate with pixel clocks up to 14 MHz, making it suited for high-speed spectrometry (binning mode) or as a high frame rate camera. The high-speed amplifier offers readout speeds of up to 14 MHz pixel rate.
