Dual PMC host CompactPCI board uses low power 1,2 GHz/800 MHz processor

10 September 2002 Computer/Embedded Technology

Concurrent Technologies' single slot PP 110/01x is an intelligent, dual PMC Host CompactPCI board. As well as two 66 MHz PMC sites, the PP 110/01x supports dual gigabit PICMG 2.16 (Packet Switching Backplane), PICMG 2.9 (IPMI system monitoring), PICMG 2.1 (hot swap), and can operate as a system controller board, a peripheral board or a satellite board.

The board uses either the 1,2 GHz mobile Intel Pentium III Processor-M or the 800 MHz low voltage Intel Pentium III processor 512K with up to 1,5 GB, 133 MHz ECC SDRAM. The PP 110/01x is ideally suited to I/O intensive embedded applications.

The two 64-bit 66 MHz PMC sites are available for user functions or for the addition of any standard PMC modules. The PMC I/O connector signals from both PMC sites are routed to the front panel and rear connectors. For faster system throughput, the PP 110/01x can auto-select to 33 MHz or 66 MHz CompactPCI backplane signalling speeds.

At the core of the design is the low power Intel Pentium III 'Tualatin' processor in FC-BGA package. The processor, with options of 1,2 GHz or 800 MHz, supports a 133 MHz front side bus and 512 KB of high-speed secondary cache. For increased reliability heat sinks are used in preference to fans for cooling the CPU. The PP 110/01x provides, soldered on board, up to 1 GB of 133 MHz ECC SDRAM that can be upgraded to 1,5 GB via the onboard memory socket, plus 32 MB of Application Flash memory and 512 KB of battery-backed SRAM. This board also provides an EIDE interface (up to Ultra-DMA100) for an optional on-board EIDE 2,5" disk drive or a CompactFlash/IBM Microdrive carrier, both options maintaining a single slot solution.

Other features available are dual 10BaseT/100Base-TX/1000Base-T Ethernet interfaces, graphics interface, keyboard/mouse interface, floppy disk interface, three RS232 serial channels, one USB port, parallel printer port, PC realtime clock, watchdog timer and long duration timer. LAN boot firmware is also included. An optional transition module, AD PP5/001, is available to facilitate applications requiring rear I/O connections.

For ease of integration, the PP 110/01x supports many of today's leading operating systems, including VxWorks, Linux, LynxOS, Windows 2000/NTXP Embedded and Solaris.
