Overtemperature protection for semiconductors
10 September 2002
Circuit & System Protection
Over-heating of power transistors, diodes, ICs and circuits can be prevented with a new 0603-sized chip from Murata.
Murata's PTC thermistor has a 1,6 x 0,8 mm footprint and is under 1,0 mm high. Nominal resistance value is 470 Ohm, there are seven temperature characteristics with sensing temperatures from 85 to 145°C and maximum voltage is increased from 16 to 32 V d.c.
The low mass, and the fact that there is no coating gives excellent thermal response. As this is a solid-state semiconductor component, resistance to mechanical vibration and impact-shock are also excellent.
Because there are no moving parts, the PRF18 family of PTCs provides a prolonged and noiseless service life, unlike bimetallic devices with the problems associated with contacts opening and closing. PTCs need over 60% less components than zener diodes for the same protection; and installed costs are lower. Terminations are lead-free.
