Mentor Graphics has renamed the company's popular Packaged Power design flow to FPGA Advantage.
Originally launched as the industry's first complete HDL-based design flow for application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), Packaged Power's evolution to FPGA Advantage targets growing demand for a new class of programmable logic devices from Altera and Xilinx.
"FPGA device size and complexity have grown rapidly over the past few years, finally catching up with EDA software," said Anne Wagner, Vice President and General Manager of Mentor Graphics HDL Design Division. With vendors like Altera and Xilinx now targeting the traditional ASIC market, designers need advanced tools and methodologies to take advantage of these new devices. FPGA Advantage is uniquely in the sweet spot of this rapidly expanding market. With FPGA Advantage, designers can create two-million gate devices today, and as devices grow, their investment is protected."
Rich Sevcik, Senior Vice President of Software, Cores and Support for Xilinx said, "FPGA designs have become increasingly complex and dynamic in nature. Only a few years ago, designers would have laughed at the idea of manufacturing a one-million gate FPGA. As more designers adopt the strategy of using the Xilinx Virtex series of FPGAs as ASIC replacements, the concept of a single design flow for FPGAs becomes essential."
Erik Cleage, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Altera added, "With designs based on our new APEX 20K and 20KE families now surpassing the size and sophis- tication of some ASICs, the single design flow offered by FPGA Advantage accelerates time-to-market, reduces risk and improves ease-of-use for our mutual customers."
Mentor Graphics says that FPGA Advantage provides engineers with a unified solution to the front-end design process within a single tool. This breaks the traditional multi-tool, multi-vendor links among graphical capture, simulation, synthesis and management and delivers a comprehensive design solution aiding bringing complex FPGAs to market.
