Next generation in subscriber loop analysers

9 October 2002 Test & Measurement

Barlow Communications, local distributors for Fluke Networks copper test products, has announced a new copper loop analyser to perform subscriber loop troubleshooting, fault analysis and location, and line qualification. Designed to be the only loop testing device a technician will need in the field, the 990DSL CopperPro Copper Loop Tester combines 12 different test sets into an easy-to-use handheld form, empowering technicians with varying levels of experience to perform tasks from basic POTS to new DSL services immediately.

Improved efficiency through automated testing

"This ease of use is more than convenient; it is critical to telephone companies hard-pressed to hire and retain expert technicians," said Bob Myers, marketing, telecom OSP solutions at Fluke Networks. "Because CopperPro's easy-to-learn programming enables technicians of all skill and experience levels to quickly perform complex tasks with a high degree of confidence, telecom service providers now can re-consider expensive training programs that may not have delivered long-term returns."

CopperPro is said to be easy to use because it combines a toolbox approach with programmable autotests that run the sequenced tests, document the results and provide easy to interpret pass/fail results. Test functions are combined to help the user quickly pinpoint problems. Results are displayed graphically on a large, bitmapped display.

Users can identify and locate common physical cable faults, such as shorts, crosses, opens, and splits using CopperPro. It also makes it easy to find the root causes of transmission problems, like excessive noise or signal loss, and helps technicians locate and identify loop treatment devices like range extenders, network interface devices and maintenance termination units. Qualification for both POTS services like Caller ID, automatic number identification and dial-up modems, as well as digital broadband services, like ADSL (DMT and CAP), T1, E1, DDS, ISDN, HDSL, and HDSL2 is considerably speeded up. A unique ADSL AutoTest quickly determines whether a pair can provide ADSL service, and even predicts upstream and downstream rates.

Scalable technology

CopperPro is built around a scalable architecture that allows technicians to tailor the set's testing capability to their specific needs and add capability later - through hardware and software upgrades - as their needs change and as new technology emerges, protecting investment in equipment and training. The unit's basic applications test voltage, opens, shorts, balance, RFL, VF noise and loss. Basic configuration also provides for line monitoring and the detection of load coils.

CopperPro has a Wideband/TDR option that arms technicians with every test they need to troubleshoot and qualify lines for digital broadband service. This option includes the ability to test and compare pairs, store measurements and test for crosstalk between pairs. Unlike standalone TDRs, CopperPro integrates precision fault location capabilities with other parametric tests through a single user interface. This integration confirms and enhances the results of other tests and leads to more accurate diagnosis of problems.
