Fluke issues important digital multimeter safety notice
9 October 2002
News
Spescom MeasureGraph Test Systems division has issued a notice to alert users of certain Fluke digital multimeters to a safety notice issued by Fluke. Those involved are the Fluke 175, 177 and 179 (170-Series DMMs) manufactured between 1 January 2001 and 12 July 2001.
Fluke says that a potentially unsafe performance characteristic has been identified. When measuring AC voltage above 500 V, the display on affected meters may be slow in showing a final, accurate measurement. The final reading may not be displayed for 6 to 18 s. During this delay, the meter may not indicate that high voltage is present, placing the user in a potentially hazardous situation. The notice is most applicable to industrial users who measure voltage exceeding 500 V AC.
This notice pertains only to those 170-Series DMMs manufactured between 1 January and 12 July, 2001. If an 'R' follows the serial number or, if the serial number is 79000001 or higher, this notice does not apply. The company stresses that no other Fluke instruments are affected.
Should you have purchased your Fluke DMM from Spescom MeasueGraph, the repair will be effected free of charge. In all other cases a minimal fee will be charged. Contact customer support services at 011 266 1661, or Van Zyl Koegelenberg, 011 266 1572, [email protected], or your local dealer.
