Ethernet-based instrument-grade measurement and control system

23 October 2002 Test & Measurement

Spescom MeasureGraph's new release from Keithley, the Model 2701 Ethernet-based multimeter/data acquisition system, is said to be the first instrument-grade measurement solution to combine superior measurement integrity with more measurement capabilities in one highly integrated system. Based on a state-of-the-art 61/2-digit, 22-bit integrating A/D converter, the Model 2701 connects directly to a PC's built-in Ethernet interface.

The instrument can make measuring, taken at any location, simple and economical. Suited for factory floor, quality control labs, and R&D settings, it connects to a facility's existing network to enable stable, precise, cost-effective measurement in 'noisy' industrial environments and remote, distributed data acquisition applications. Since it connects directly to a PC's Ethernet port, it provides reliable measurements without the configuration and installation challenges of traditional GPIB alternatives.

Each Model 2701 can be configured with up to 80 differential channels, depending on the Keithley plug-in switching/control 77xx modules that are used. The suite of 12 77xx plug-in modules enables high channel count measurement, DC and RF matrix switching, digital I/O, analog outputs, and more with a variety of connector types (screw terminals, D-sub, IDC, and SMA) making it effectively a mini-ATE system. Each channel provides built-in signal conditioning, 300 V isolation, and can be configured independently for any of 14 measurement/control functions, which include temperature (thermocouple, RTDs and thermistors), DC/AC volts and current, 2/4 wire resistance, frequency, period etc.

The Model 2701 offers a wide range of software tools, including free start-up software and drivers and more advanced optional packages such as ExceLINX-1A for dynamic data logging within Microsoft Excel and TestPoint graphical programming language. All these software tools communicate with the instrument through the industry-standard Windows TCP/IP socket interface.
