Tri-colour SPI-bus LED driver

20 November 2002 Power Electronics / Power Management

As part of its ongoing initiative to expand its presence in the portable and wireless markets, ON Semiconductor developed the NLSF595 - an 8-segment, tri-colour LED driver for use in keyboard illumination and special lighting in wireless handsets, digital-still and digital-video cameras and MP3 players.

"The NLSF595 is a tiny, single-part option for implementing up to two tri-colour LEDs in a single handheld electronic product," said Frank Dover, ON Semiconductor product line manager for the Standard Components division. "It is a cost-effective, space-saving answer to the industry demand for improved performance and added features while occupying less board space and consuming less power."

The NLSF595 consumes nearly zero power in the all-important standby state. It has: wide operating voltage range (2,0 V to 5,5 V); supports data rates of greater than 25 MHz; data may be put into the device at a 50 MHz rate when operating at 3,3 V; has over-voltage tolerance at its output, so it can directly drive the LEDs; unused drivers may be paralleled, if required, to drive higher current; can be SPI bus connected (D, C, EN); devices can be cascaded; offered in 16-lead QFN package (3 x 3 mm).
