Bi- and tri-colour PLCC-4 packaged LEDs

26 February 2003 Opto-Electronics

Agilent Technologies has introduced a family of multicolour plastic-leaded chip carrier (PLCC) surface-mount LEDs used primarily for indoor electronic signs and signals.

The LEDs are available in the widely used PLCC-4 (four-pin) package in both two- and three-colour combinations, including the red-green-blue required for interior full colour video signs and variable message panels.

In sign applications, the small 3,2 mm (H) x 2,8 mm (W) x 1,9 mm (D) package and large illuminated area provide a higher image resolution, while the black surface offers higher contrast than conventional through-hole and surface-mount LEDs. The LEDs are also suited for automotive interior lighting applications such as instrument cluster and central console backlighting and office equipment. The package features an external reflector that makes it simple to couple with a light pipe or light guide to provide uniform illumination of large areas.

Agilent says that the package design, coupled with careful selection of component materials, ensures high reliability over a wider operating temperature range of -55 to +100°C, compared to the -30 to +85°C provided by surface-mount LEDs.
