Low noise avalanche detectors

26 February 2003 Opto-Electronics

Hamamatsu Photonics has available a range of high sensitivity, low noise avalanche photodiodes for fluorescence, luminescence and other low light level applications. The S6045 series and S534x series can provide a cost-effective alternative to PMTs says the company.

The devices have a low temperature co-efficient, thereby reducing the effect of gain variation with changing ambient temperature. To stabilise operating temperature and reduce dark current further, products can be supplied with integral peltier cooler such as the S4315 series. These devices are available from DC to 1,5 GHz, with an intrinsic gain of around x100.

For optimum noise performance a compact APD module can be supplied, housing the APD detector, DC-DC converter, matched transimpedance amplifier circuit and pre-calibrated temperature control circuitry. Simple operation is then realised by connecting to a low voltage 12 V d.c. supply. Devices can also be supplied with industry standard input connectors for easy attachment to a microscope via fibre.
