Chips integrate high-performance analog and DSP

12 March 2003 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Analog Devices' ADSP-2199x family of mixed-signal DSPs integrates high-performance analog and DSP technologies in a single general-purpose device. These devices target mixed-signal embedded-control and signal-processing applications, such as industrial-process automation, data-acquisition systems, intelligent sensor interfaces, and power-control systems. ADSP-2199x devices integrate high-performance analog functions with a 16-bit, fixed-point, ADSP-219x multiply-accumulate core and, as a result, are code-compatible with ADSP-21xx and ADMC devices.

The ADSP-21990 device integrates the 219x DSP core with an eight-channel, 14-bit, 20 MSPS ADC core with a typical SNR of 70 dB on one chip. Dual sample-and-hold amplifiers support simultaneous sampling. After a 400-ns latency to prime the six-stage ADC pipeline with the first sample, a dedicated DMA channel transfers the ADC data to memory, enabling the balancing of the data throughput with the computational capability of the DSP core. A precision on-chip voltage reference and an integrated power-on-reset circuit round out the integrated mixed-signal functions. On-chip peripherals include PWM-generation modules, incremental encoder interfaces, timers, serial-communication ports, watchdog timers, and interrupt controllers. Memory integration includes 4k words of program RAM, 4k words of data RAM, and an external address space of 1M word.

The ADSP-21990 is available in 196-ball mini-BGA and 176-pin TQFP packages and supports operation across the industrial range of -40 to +85°C. The ADSP-21991 is pin-for-pin compatible with the ADSP-21990 and features expanded on-chip memories of as much as 32k words of program RAM and 8k words of data RAM. Analog Devices' CrossCore hardware- and software-development tools, including JTAG ICE, VisualDSP++, and EZ-Kit Lite, support both devices.
