Triple power regulator solution lowers cost and size for WLAN devices

12 March 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Intersil has combined its expertise in power management and wireless LAN chipset design to develop a new triple low-dropout (LDO) regulator IC that reduces board space and costs by combining three LDO Regulators, a reset function and extensive circuit protection functions into a single chip.

The innovative ISL6411 single chip power solution makes it easy for designers of wireless local area networking (WLAN) systems to power the latest generation of small form factor industry standard cards such as PCMCIA, mini-PCI and Cardbus-32.

This device is a major development for Intersil as it replaces three regulators and numerous support components on its PRISM WLAN chip set reference designs. The ISL6411is a complete ultra low noise triple-output linear regulator IC with microprocessor reset. It accepts an input voltage range of 2,5 V to 3,8 V and provides three regulated output voltages: 1,8 V (LDO1) for baseband processor/media access controller (BBP/MAC), 2,84 V (LDO2) for analog functions, and another 2,84 V (LDO3) for voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). On-chip logic provides sequencing for BBP/MAC and analog supply voltage outputs. LDO3 features ultra low noise that does not generally exceed 30 µV r.m.s. to aid VCO stability. High integration and the thin quad flat no-lead (QFN - 4 x 4 mm) package provide a small DC-DC converter size.
