Gen-set for telecommunications operators

12 March 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Kohler Power Systems offers a generator set designed specifically for telecom operators wanting to guard against any break in the electricity supply for Internet, satellite, mobile phone or cable-television service.

Traditionally, risks of energy loss in these sectors is taken care of by large banks of DC batteries - which are cumbersome and heavy. Autonomy is also restricted in the event of a lengthy break. Batteries also have a relatively short life and have to be replaced regularly. Further, it is difficult to recycle products of this type. Lastly, the cost of maintaining the battery bank is higher than an independent system of energy production.

In designing the Kohler Power Systems COM 6, the engineers imagined and created a compact generator set, making a permanent source of energy possible, guaranteeing that operators can maintain a top of the range service for their clients. Occupying less than 1 cubic metre and weighing only 193 kg, the COM 6 is powered by a 4-stroke, 20 hp air-cooled engine, and runs on natural gas or LPG. This limits the production of toxins and makes it environment-friendly. Also, sound-proof aluminium casing means it runs silently.

Offering 100 hours of autonomy between maintenance periods, it has a sophisticated electronics regulator that adapts the best speed of the motor and the alternator tension in order to obtain the right power and output voltage. It has a built-in control panel and can be remotely-controlled.

Specs: power rating 6 kW (from -30 to +50°C), 24 V or 48 V d.c., Kohler PMG alternator, electronic control, cyclical starter, and it is designed to last more than 20 years.
