Microchip's 500 mA, DC-to-DC synchronous step-down converter operates over a wide range of input and output conditions and provides an efficient method of transforming battery or bus voltage to the system requirements. Applications are in cellphones, PDAs, digital cameras, USB-powered devices etc. The MCP1601 operates in three modes and automatically switches among them to follow a maximum efficiency curve for the given input/output condition. Operating modes include: pulse width modulation (PWM), for normal medium-to-high load conditions; pulse frequency modulation (PFM), for light or no-load conditions; and low-drop-out mode (LDO), for cases when the input approaches the output voltage. Operating voltage ranges from 2,7 to 5,5 V, while output ranges from 0,9 V up to the input voltage. Shutdown current is less than 0,1 µA. Load current capability is up to 500 mA continuous and there are integrated safety features.
