Battery Technologies Conference goes virtual

16 October 2020 News

Vukani Communications is back again with the 6th edition of the Battery Technologies Conference, and this time around the gathering is virtual. Topics to be discussed include, but are not limited to:

• Battery storage developments.

• Battery storage in the automotive industry.

• Outlook of the battery storage market.

• Hybridisation of battery technology systems.

• Research and developments.

• Lead-acid battery performance improvements.

• Lithium-ion battery life cycle.

• Cost reduction and energy efficiency of battery storage.

Electrical energy is an essential commodity without having any easy and direct storage facilities by different packaging, unlike other commodities. Battery energy storage systems are widely used for a variety of applications. There is a huge need for batteries in the market since a major part of the economy across the globe cannot move without battery storage.

Battery storage technologies have been evolving starting from nickel-iron to the stable, long sustaining technology of lead-acid. Lead-acid battery storage has been quite stable for many decades and it needs performance improvement to suit the needs of our time, mainly in synergy with the advancement of Industry 4.0. Lithium-ion batteries have captured a good fraction of the market, even though it has two major issues to deal with in terms of high cost and complications in recycling. Aluminium-ion is a good alternative for lithium-ion batteries with slightly lower performance but huge cost savings, and thus it provides a good trade-off between performance and cost.

Hence the need for continuous attention from research and innovation perspectives for better serving the storage needs within the transport sector and renewable energy sector, amongst others. All stakeholders in the battery energy storage sector remain hungry for the latest developments in battery management systems with different technologies, in addition to hybridisation of technologies for better performance with lower costs. The main focus remains on cost reduction, energy efficiency enhancement as well as life cycles.

What’s more, there is a persistent need for ensuring a green and clean environment with a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. The automotive industry has also been going through evolutionary transitions from internal combustion engine operated vehicles to electric vehicles through several stages of a mix of hybrid vehicles. It demands suitable battery storage systems with quick charging facilities but without a significant reduction in life cycles.

The marriage between the automotive industry and the battery storage industry is too deep to be severed and thus there is a pressing need for synchronous evolution of both of these industries. For a sustainable future, both of these industries need to remain dynamically adaptive to changes and transitions with time, as industrial revolutions are progressing in leaps and bounds. Research discussions and exploratory innovations are called for from experts across the globe.

Thus Vukani Communications is keen in partnering with these developments for improvised industry solutions with a competitive edge. This webinar will provide highly topical discussions around battery storage systems in order to adapt to current and future needs of the market while maximising benefits going forward.
