USB-C charging port controller SoC

Now that the EU has approved the common charger law that will make it compulsory for all electronic devices sold in the EU to have an integrated USB-C port by 2024, manufacturers will be scrambling to make sure that devices comply. Although many laptop and smartphone manufacturers have already adopted the common charging connector, millions of consumer electronics still use proprietary connectors or the good, old barrel jack to receive power.

Infineon has come up with a way out. The EZ-PD Barrel Connector Replacement (BCR) controller is an ideal solution for replacing these legacy connectors with USB-C enabling any device to be powered by a USB-C charger, thereby meeting the requirements of the EU common charger mandate.

The EZ-PD BCR solution integrates all required components to provide a USB-C power consumer system-on-chip (SoC). The chip includes the complete USB-C interface, and the power delivery policy manager runs autonomously without the need for firmware development.

The highly integrated SoC contains several analog components, including a 30 V-tolerant LDO, PMOS gate driver and VBus discharge FET. The chip uses the 5 to 20 V VBus directly as power supply, eliminating the need for an external voltage regulator. The USB-C connector is protected by the solution with its on-chip over-voltage, under-voltage and over-current protection, and the VBus short-circuit protection. The SoC also conforms to IEC61000-4-2 to offer ESD protection.

The EZ-PD BCR chip is supplied in a 4 x 4 mm QFN package and supports an operating temperature of -40 to 105°C, meeting the operating range of the vast majority of consumer and industrial applications.
