The tech driving bi-directional EV charging

31 May 2023 Power Electronics / Power Management

Today's global challenges of decarbonisation, combined with rising energy demand, make bi-directional electric vehicle charging more important than ever. Semiconductor solutions to support this application are, therefore, increasing in importance. This webinar will deliver an overview of the power conversion topologies for bi-directional DC charging and take a closer look at an application example based on Infineon’s 50 kW reference design.

The webinar will start by taking a brief look at EV charging trends that have an impact on semiconductors and how bi-directional charging plays a role in specific applications. For this, the different bi-directional charging use cases and their basic requirements will be touched on.

Building on this, the importance of semiconductors for off-board charging solutions, especially typical power conversion topologies for PFCs and DC/DCs and their suitability for bi-directional charging will be focused on. In this context, an implementation example based on the new Infineon 50 kW bi-directional charger reference design is provided.

Other requirements for semiconductor solutions beyond power conversion will then also be addressed. Finally, an overview of suitable Infineon products for EV charging applications will be discussed.

Key takeaways from this webinar will be:

• Learn how bi-directional charging is part of the answer to today’s global challenges of decarbonisation and increasing energy demand.

• Gain an overview of the power conversion topologies for bi-directional DC charging.

• Explore an application example based on Infineon’s 50 kW reference design.

• Get to know how on-board chargers (OBC) follow similar trends and solutions.
