Web protal innovates product information access for electronic component industry

WhoMakesIt.Com, the electronic industry's first Web portal designed to provide direct access to product information from manufacturers for electronic component industry professionals, is now live at www.whomakesit.com.

Within a single session, this unique supplier-neutral portal allows the user to search for components by specifying multiple parameters; prioritise key product attributes; compare product information from multiple manufacturers; and then link directly to the location on the manufacturer's website where the specific information resides.

According to Brad Albright, General Manager of WhoMakesIt.Com, this breakthrough, 'one-session' process not only revolutionises electronic component information access by providing the industry with fast and efficient access to the manufacturer's latest product information, but it can also increase engineering productivity by shortening the development cycle through quicker component selection.

"WhoMakesIt.Com is the first site of its kind that's been developed to satisfy the specific needs of both suppliers and consumers of electronic components," said Albright, "Our extensive research in the electronic component industry clearly revealed that this community wants up-to-date information direct from the manufacturers and an easy way to find and compare it. In discussions with component manufacturers, meanwhile, it was obvious that they were looking for greater exposure to design-win opportunities and to increase traffic to their websites for product selection. It is the only resource available that meets all these requirements and brings both communities together in a neutral environment."

Albright says that unlike typical electronic industry websites that merely 'republish' suppliers' component data, WhoMakesIt.Com eases the task of selecting products because designers can perform comprehensive parametric searches and then be guided deep within manufacturers' sites to the exact locations where the specific information resides. These unique capabilities represent a valuable time-saving benefit to designers because they eliminate searching a manufacturer's home page or weeding through imprecise results from general search engines. And because the manufacturer's site is always the most trusted source for up-to-date information, the possibility of designing with outdated product information is avoided.

WhoMakesIt.Com is also a valuable tool for finding components that are available from multiple manufacturers. Specifically, the parametric search capability allows engineers as well as non-technical personnel to easily define the product attributes needed to locate alternate sources. The site contains information from more than 1200 electronic component manufacturers, representing more than three million products, (currently). Also, as a neutral site, it provides equal access to both large and small manufacturers and contains information from all known sources of availability.
