ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) flooring provides a reliable, long-term solution for managing static electricity by safely dissipating static charges through the floor to a designated ground point.
A key consideration when selecting ESD flooring is its resistance to earth, measured in ohms. This value indicates how much the material resists the flow of electrical current – crucial for determining whether the floor meets dissipative or conductive requirements.
For high-performance environments, ESD flooring must also offer excellent abrasion and chemical resistance. Welded seams ensure the surface is completely sealed, preventing the buildup of dirt and bacteria. It is important not to apply a floor sealer upon installation, as this may interfere with the flooring’s electrostatic properties.
Proper installation is essential to ensure operational safety and effectiveness and using copper or aluminium grounding grids and conductive adhesives during installation is vital to achieving consistent results. Actum supplies and installs both dissipative and conductive ESD flooring solutions, available in vinyl, epoxy, interlocking tiles, paint, or specialised dissipative sealers.
To verify ESD floor performance, two critical tests should be conducted:
• Point-to-Point Resistance Test – Confirms that the flooring material meets either static-dissipative or conductive requirements.
• Continuity to Earth Test – Ensures the floor is properly grounded by measuring the electrical path from the floor to earth.
All Altico Static Control Solutions installations and products are ISO 140001 and ISO 9001:2000 certified. As a division of Actum, the company focuses exclusively on static control in the workplace, offering a complete range of static control solutions and products.
