Developments in the video interface market

3 September 2008 News

The market for video interface has long been dominated by analog standards. Digital video interface standards such as DVI and HDMI have appeared in the last decade, and now it is common for a product to include both digital and analog interfaces. New standards such as DisplayPort and wireless HD are poised to take a significant share of the digital market, and over the next several years these standards are expected to become mainstream.

Within the computer market, a display will usually have a DVI connection along with the analog VGA. DisplayPort seeks to replace DVI in the short term and VGA in the long term. Devices with a DisplayPort connection are just beginning to hit the market, but with the support given from the major computer manufacturers, it is expected that DisplayPort will be the dominant digital standard in the computer market within the next four to five years.

The consumer electronics market is also moving to digital interface connections. Currently, a typical consumer product like a television or DVD player will have HDMI as well as an analog connection such as S-video. Wireless HD is seen as a potential replacement for HDMI, and a welcome one at that, as the omission of cumbersome cables is bound to be pleasing for consumers. While wireless HD standards are expected to see very strong growth over the forecast period, they are not expected to displace HDMI just yet. By 2013, Databeans expects revenues from HDMI to cross the $2 billion threshold, while wireless HD sales should reach half a billion dollars.

The overall digital interface market is expected to generate revenues of $2,3 billion this year, and almost $4,5 billion by 2013. This growth is driven by both the computer and consumer markets, where digital interface should continue to chip away at analog’s share. The big story should be DisplayPort’s takeover of the computer market and the demise of DVI, while the availability of wireless options in the consumer market is also expected to be a significant contributor to revenue growth.
