Beta test for locally manufactured DDR memory

22 November 2000 News

The memory manufacturing plant recently commissioned by Rectron Holdings, one of South Africa's largest IT-focused distributors, is to manufacture new super high-speed double data rate (DDR) chips.

According to Rectron CEO, Mark Lu, the beta test recently carried out represents a 'first' for South Africa, as this technology is not yet widely available globally.

"DDR memory is the highest bandwidth and lowest latency PC memory technology available and will enable PCs to deliver new levels of performance on math-intensive applications such as video editing, CAD/CAM, scientific applications and Internet content creation," says Lu. "It will also make its way into high-end server platforms, driven by the performance, capacity, cost and infrastructure continuity of next-generation technology."

Rectron joins an elite band of DDR memory global manufacturers. The company says full production is planned to begin in December 2000.

"The DDR chipset will be installed in Rectron's own PC boards and supplied to local OEM PC manufacturers. Using local manufacturing processes we will be able to manufacture the chips at cost levels that are in line with today's mainstream PC memory costs and more cost-effectively locally than to import them from abroad," says Lu.

"The Rectron plant is able to produce memory to order within a period of 24 hours, significantly less than the average two weeks for imported memory shipments," he adds.
