Xilinx announced third quarter fiscal 2013 sales of $509,8 million, down 6% sequentially and flat from the third quarter of the prior fiscal year. Third quarter fiscal 2013 net income was $103,6 million, or $0,38 per diluted share, less than both the prior-quarter and year-ago-quarter figures of $123,4 million ($0,46 per diluted share) and $127 million ($0,47 per diluted share) respectively.

Citing strong demand, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) announced consolidated revenue of NT$131,31 billion, net income of NT$41,57 billion and diluted earnings per share of NT$1,61 for its fourth quarter ended 31 December 2012. Year-over-year, fourth quarter revenue increased 25,4%, but decreased 7,1% sequentially.

Linear Technology reported financial results for the fiscal quarter ended 30 December 2012. Quarterly revenues of $305,3 million for the second quarter of fiscal year 2013 decreased 8,9% from the previous quarter’s revenue of $335,1 million and increased 3,7% over $294,3 million reported in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012. Net income of $88,8 million decreased 15,5% from the first quarter of fiscal year 2013 and increased 1% over the second quarter of fiscal year 2012.

Companies

For the second year running, Analog Devices was named one of the world’s most innovative companies according to the Thomson Reuters 2012 Top 100 Global Innovator SM programme, which analyses patent data and related metrics using a proprietary methodology to identify the organisations that lead the world in innovation activity.

Premier Farnell completed its acquisition of Shenzhen Embest Technology, a provider of embedded system development boards and tools, as well as design engineering services. Embest, which is based in China and has 12 years of embedded systems design experience, will provide solutions to customers of Premier Farnell across the world.

Atmel has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Ozmo, a provider of ultra-low power Wi-Fi solutions. Atmel expects the transaction to close by year end and to be accretive to its earnings in 2014.

Industry

ABI Research expects the ultra low-power wireless connectivity IC market to grow to over $2 billion in annual revenues by 2016. This will be shared by a number of technologies with Bluetooth Smart and 802.15.4 being the two main markets. ZigBee’s mesh networking capability with theoretically unlimited node count will offer significant competition in markets where large nodes counts are likely, such as home networking, while in the longer term, low-power Wi-Fi will challenge in point-to-point applications including TV remote controls, wireless mice and keyboards.

The digital power market is currently one of the fastest-growing segments of the power management industry for power supply and power IC manufacturers. The total global market for digital power components is forecast to quadruple to $15 billion from 2012 to 2017. The market for digital power supplies is projected to grow to almost $12,5 billion in 2017 and the digital power IC market is forecast to be worth over $2,5 billion.

Technology

Altera announced the first shipments of its 28 nm system-on-chip (SoC) devices, which combine a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor system with FPGA logic on a single device. Targeting developers in the wireless communications, industrial, video surveillance, automotive and medical equipment markets, the first devices Altera is shipping are low-power, low-cost Cyclone V SoCs.

The ZigBee Alliance announced the most eco-friendly way to power ZigBee products via its new Green Power feature. Products, including switches and dimmers, can now be easily powered with available energy harvesting sources rather than using a battery or AC mains power, creating a no-maintenance, environmentally friendly solution. Green Power is an optional feature for the ZigBee PRO feature set that is part of the enhanced ZigBee 2012 specification recently ratified and released to Alliance members.
