Cree announced revenue of $346,3 million for its second quarter of fiscal 2013, ended 30 December 2012. This represents a 14% increase compared to the second quarter of fiscal 2012 and a 10% increase compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2013. GAAP net income for the second quarter was $20,4 million, or $0,18 per diluted share, an increase of 69% compared to the second quarter of fiscal 2012.

For its fiscal fourth quarter of 2012, Texas Instruments announced revenue of $2,98 billion (12% down from the prior quarter and 13% down from the year-ago quarter), net income of $264 million (66% down from the prior quarter and 11% down from the year-ago quarter) and earnings per share (EPS) of 23 cents (66% down from the prior quarter and 8% down from the year-ago quarter).

Net sales for Freescale Semiconductor’s calendar year 2012 were $3,95 billion, compared to $4,57 billion in calendar year 2011. Net loss for the year was $102 million or $0,41 per share, compared to a loss of $410 million, or $1,82 per share, in calendar year 2011.

Revenues for ams’ full-year 2012 were 387,6 million Euros, an increase of 41% from the previous year. Revenues for the company’s fourth quarter were 97,5 million Euros, an increase of 20% over the last quarter of 2011 and a decrease of 6% quarter-on-quarter. Net income for 2012 was 81,9 million Euros, up 132% over 2011, while diluted EPS were 6,06 Euros, compared to the previous year’s 2,98 Euros.

For the first quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, Infineon Technologies achieved revenues of 851 million Euros, net income of 19 million Euros and diluted EPS of 0,02 Euros. These figures compare to revenues of 946 million Euros, net income of 96 million Euros and diluted EPS of 0,09 Euros for the first quarter of the previous year.

Announcing its results for the fourth quarter of 2012, Cypress Semiconductor recorded revenue of $180,3 million, net loss of $24,2 million and diluted EPS of -$0,17. These figures are down on both the prior quarter (revenue of $203 million, net income of $14,3 million and diluted EPS of $0,09) and the year-ago quarter (revenue of $242,4 million, net income of $31,7 million and diluted EPS of $0,18).

Maxim reported net revenue of $605 million for its second quarter of fiscal 2013 ended 29 December 2012, a 3% decrease from $623 million revenue recorded in the prior quarter. Diluted EPS for the quarter were $0,26 based on net income $76,6 million, compared to net income of $127,9 million and diluted EPS of $0,43 in the prior quarter.

Fairchild Semiconductor’s full-year revenues for 2012 were $1,4 billion, down about 12% from 2011. The company reported net income of $25 million or $0,19 per diluted share in 2012, compared to net income of $146 million or $1,12 per diluted share in 2011.

National Instruments announced record fourth-quarter revenue of $300 million, an increase of 8% year-over-year. Full-year 2012 revenue also hit an all-time high at $1,14 billion, up 12% year-over-year. GAAP net income for 2012 was $90 million, with fully diluted EPS of $0,73.

NXP Semiconductors achieved revenues for the 2012 fiscal year of $4,36 billion, a 4% increase over the company’s 2011 figures. Improved revenues did not prevent the company from recording a loss, however, with a net loss of $115 million (EPS of -$0,46) for 2012 comparing to a net income of $390 million and EPS of $1,57 for 2011.

STMicroelectronics announced it has shipped three billion MEMS sensors to date; laid side by side, these chips would exceed the height of Mt Everest. According to information and analytics firm IHS, ST’s total MEMS and sensor sales grew more than 19% in 2012, reaching a total of approximately $800 million. In the largest of these markets, motion sensors in mobile handsets and tablets, ST’s MEMS sales accounted for 48% of the market, well more than twice as large as that of its closest competitor, according to IHS.

Atmel has signed an agreement with Exegin Technologies, a supplier of ZigBee network stacks, to jointly offer integrated wireless communications solutions for smart grid applications. In this agreement, Exegin will license its ZigBee networking stacks to Atmel for use in a variety of solutions for smart grid applications in wireless mesh networks.

Databeans has predicted that the year 2013 will see a solid rebound for the global semiconductor market, growing by 7% from 2012 totals to reach $313,04 billion. The research firm’s forecast for the long term is also optimistically cast at 9% compound annual growth for the period from 2010 to 2018.

Eric Lidow, co-founder of International Rectifier and a pioneer in the field of power semiconductors, passed away on 18 January at the age of 100. He played a leading role in the development and commercialisation of several cornerstone technologies relating to photovoltaic cells, selenium photocells and rectifiers, silicon controlled rectifiers, power germanium rectifiers and power MOSFETs.
