Renesas ships billionth RX MCU

24 November 2021 DSP, Micros & Memory

To date, Renesas Electronics has delivered more than one billion microcontrollers (MCUs) from the RX family of 32-bit MCUs, which incorporate the company’s proprietary RX CPU core. Since its launch in 2009, the RX family has expanded to include general-purpose, motor control, touch sensing and industrial Ethernet applications and has been adopted in a wide range of consumer, industrial and IoT applications. In the home air conditioner compressor market, for example, the devices’ outstanding inverter control has led to adoption by more than 70% of major manufacturers around the world.

As a result of their performance advantages in a wide range of applications, RX MCUs are expected to achieve a record high growth of more than 30% in 2021 (for which financial results are yet to be released), with sales exceeding 35 billion yen (roughly $304 million). Renesas has announced that it will step up investment in production capacity in 2022 by combining internal production with outside foundries, to establish a more flexible production system that will support expected growth.
