Dual wireless connectivity in a compact package

27 November 2025 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

In the fast-moving world of embedded connectivity, Quectel’s FCS950R emerges as a compelling option for designers seeking dual wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) in a very compact footprint. The FCS950R delivers Wi-Fi 5 (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity in an ultra-small (12 x 12 x 2,35 mm) LCC package, making it well-suited to space- and cost-sensitive applications.

The FCS950R support IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac across 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz bands with maximum Wi-Fi throughput of up to 433,3 Mbps in 802.11ac mode. Both Bluetooth classic and BLE profiles are available.

From a design-engineer standpoint the FCS950R brings several beneficial attributes:

• Compact footprint: At just 12 x 12 mm and with low height (2,35 mm), the module significantly eases integration into space-constrained devices like smart home gateways, embedded controllers, wearables, and industrial IoT nodes.

• Dual-radio capability: Having both Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 built-in allows a single module to serve multiple connectivity needs: Wi-Fi for high-throughput communication (firmware downloads, video, large data sets), and Bluetooth for local device connections, sensors, provisioning, or audio.

• Simplified interface: Using SDIO for Wi-Fi and UART/PCM for Bluetooth means host integration is straightforward for many microcontroller or processor-based designs. This reduces design complexity.

• Rugged, manufacturing-friendly packaging: The module’s surface-mount LCC package and laser-engraving for marking imply it is built for automated manufacturing at scale.

• Strong performance envelope: 433 Mbps is still ample for many embedded use-cases, and the inclusion of Wi-Fi 5 helps future-proof the device.

For designers looking to deliver dual-radio connectivity in compact and cost-sensitive devices, the Quectel FCS950R offers a strong blend of size and performance.
