Cables for extreme temperatures

11 July 2012 Interconnection

The Vibraflame range of cable, made by Axon, is designed to resist higher temperatures and more rigorous operating conditions than most other types of flexible cable. The cables are suitable for the most demanding applications in steel and aluminium plants, coke mills, glass factories, oil refineries and offshore rigs, and in various military and space installations and equipment.

The cables can work where others fail because they will maintain electrical circuit integrity at peak temperatures as high as 1565°C. In fires exceeding 1050°C, they can maintain integrity for a minimum of four hours. In molten steel or aluminium, they can function for 15 minutes, allowing time to take steps to prevent costly equipment damage. In addition to heat, Vibraflame is resistant to weather, water, chemicals, acids and lubricants.

Vibraflame often makes new, simpler and money-saving layouts possible – they may, for instance, eliminate the need for protective conduits. The cables meet the most rigid international and national tests such as NBN C 30-004 with test conditions of: temperature produced by gas burner of 900°C at approximately 50°C for a duration of three hours; mechanical impact every 30 seconds; current leakage not to exceed 1 A per conductor; test must be passed by four successive samples.
