High-frequency VCSO

Vectron announced its new VS–501, a high-frequency, low-noise VCSO (voltage controlled SAW oscillator) providing low phase noise clock signals to high-speed data converter applications.

Data converters are evolving to reach higher speeds and enabling architectural evolution in the way that high-throughput data is processed in the digital domain. High-speed digital-to-analog converters (DAC) can now output RF signals directly, removing the need for analog up-conversion stages and allowing for true software-defined radio architectures. High-speed ADCs are making coherent optical ­communications a reality.

Utilising data conversion on high-speed signals, whether in wireless base-stations, optical communications, test and measurement or military communications, requires extremely low-phase-noise, low-jitter clock signals in order to guarantee the highest levels of signal quality.

The VS–501 provides these performance ­levels in the 800 MHz to 2,5 GHz range with noise floors as low as -164 dBc/Hz and integrated phase jitter at 12 fs rms in the 12 kHz to 20 MHz band.
