Highly robust enclosure systems

Pentair’s Titan family offers a platform on which to build systems for all levels of ruggedness requiring the ability to withstand shocks and vibrations up to 25 G or up to 40 G.

The Titan COTS VME64x is a 19” system based on the Schroff rugged subrack and is created for shock levels up to 25 G at 3 G vibration. It features forced air flow with front-to-back cooling and fan speed control, with a fan tray removable from the front.

The system has space for up to four pluggable power supply units with 24 V d.c. input at the rear. A 6U front and 6U rear I/O card cage with 12 slot VME64x backplane come as standard, with other slot counts or VPX, VXS, CompactPCI or custom backplanes available on request. The COTS platform includes provision for telescopic slides and an LED indication unit for voltages on the front side.

For particularly high shock and vibration requirements of up to 40 G, the range includes the Titan ATR system family. These systems are used primarily in civil and military aviation, in unmanned aircraft, in space applications, helicopters and other mobile equipment such as tanks or trains.

The Titan ATR system family conforms to the standardised ATR Short dimensions (width x depth x height: 145 x 328,8 x 193,5 mm) and offers three 3U slots with Open VPX profile for PCIe applications. Other topologies such as VME or CompactPCI are also available and a fourth slot can hold an Ethernet switch, which thus also enables a multiprocessor system to be built.

The backplane fitted operates at a data transfer rate of 10 Gbps. It is linked directly to a transition module, thus avoiding the wiring of the backplane, which tends to be susceptible to interference, to the I/O connectors. The transition module is bolted simply onto the case and can be replaced easily.

The power supply unit, also supplied as standard, has an output capacity of 150 W, input voltage of 28 V, three output voltages (5 V, 3,3 V and ±12 V) and a high efficiency of 85%. The typical bridging time of 4 ms can be increased to 50 ms by means of a capacitor bank.

The Titan ATR systems can be equipped with high EMC and IP protection levels using integral gasketing. All input and output signals plus the PSU are also fitted with electrical filters. The system is thus fully shielded.

Cooling is achieved internally via conduction cooling and can be supplemented if required by forced air cooling from outside. For this purpose the side panels are provided with cladded cooling fins, through which air is drawn from front to rear by means of a fan in the rear of the system. A temperature controller ensures that the fans are only activated if the temperature exceeds a specified value.

At an ambient temperature of 71°C the system can extract 125 W of dissipation loss and at 65°C up to 175 W. Titan ATR systems are designed for ambient temperatures between -40°C and +71°C and a relative humidity of 5 to 95% (salt spray up to 5%). On request the temperature range can be extended to -50°C to 71°C.

The Titan ATR is constructed in corrosion-resistant hard anodised aircraft-grade aluminium and weighs less than 6 kg including backplane, I/O transition board and PSU. The interior of the system is also corrosion-proof thanks to a chemical coating, and is electrically conductive. All boards used are protected against environmental influences by conformal coating. Two options are available for mounting the systems: normal fixed mounting using bolts or the easy-to-open ARINC 404A fixing.

The product is based on a standard platform that can be modified in a large number of ways, including alternative mounting options, colour design, cooling options, case shape and size, adaption of transition board, filtering, PSU, etc.
