MikroElektronika has released a set of development tools for FTDI’s recently announced EVE (Embedded Video Engine) technology. The technology is based on a concept similar to how traditional graphics cards, used for high-end graphics in desktop computers, relieve the central processor of all rendering responsibilities.
FTDI’s FT800 chip, the first to feature EVE technology, does just this for embedded systems. The result is that enhanced graphics are possible with even low-cost 8-bit microcontrollers. In addition to its display capabilities, the FT800 can also handle touchscreen responsibilities as well as audio.
MikroElektronika’s offering includes the ConnectEVE FT800 breakout board with 4,3” touchscreen TFT display, libraries for PIC, AVR, ARM and 8051 compilers, and built-in support for the technology, integrated into VisualTFT GUI (graphical user interface) design software.
The VisualTFT software makes the design of professional user interfaces easy, with drag-and-drop placement of controls such as buttons, gauges, sliders, text and many more components. All that the developer then needs to do is respond to events generated by the components, such as when a button is pressed or a slider adjusted, with code written in any of MikroElektronika’s C, BASIC or Pascal compilers.
