EPS-9600 Managed Layer 3 Ethernet Switch with next-generation Time- Sensitive Networking

Diamond Systems has introduced EPS-9610 (part of the EPS-9600 family), a rugged, ultra-compact embedded Ethernet switch which integrates military-grade ruggedness with next-generation Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) capabilities, providing precise sub microsecond-level time synchronisation across networks using a master clock, which may be a GPS-disciplined clock or atomic clock as required. TSN-aware PHYs extend deterministic behaviour across the Ethernet fabric.

Hardware

The EPS-9600 family is based on the Microchip LAN969x family, featuring high capacity and port count with 10G switching capability and Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) capability. All I/O connectors are latching for improved reliability, and all components, as well as the entire board, are rated for -40°C to +85°C operation. Both heat sink and heat spreader cooling options are available to support varying installation requirements. The PC104 mounting-hole pattern provides compatibility with other industry products and facilitates installation in existing mechanical platforms.

Embedded Software

The layer 3 embedded software provides an impressive array of features for management of embedded networks. The Microchip LAN969x switch family is a flexible solution for driving the transition to Time-Sensitive networking (TSN) in industrial automation and other embedded applications. The LAN9696 (66 Gbps) is a highly configurable device that supports a combination of 1 Gbps, 2,5 Gbps and 10 Gbps Ethernet ports. The powerful 1 GHz CPU enables full management of layer 3 industrial Ethernet switching. The device provides a rich set of industrial Ethernet switching features including a comprehensive TSN feature set, L2 switching, L3 routing, seamless redundancy, secure boot, high-precision timing and an extended temperature range. Using multi-stage Versatile Content Aware Processor (VCAP) technology, they enable Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) and Quality of Service (QoS) processing to deliver differentiated services, security via intelligent frame processing and flexible frame manipulation.

Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN)

The mission critical real-time control system of a missile, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), aircraft, ground vehicle, aerospace, etc., require that messages between sub-systems, servos and sensors be deterministic, repeatable and with very low jitter as the digital filter control loop coefficients need to be pre-determined. In the past buses like MIL-STD-1553, Arcnet and CAN were used to achieve this, while Ethernet, as optimised for large slow messages, was relegated to home and office networks. Ethernet however, with the addition of the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) and the Precision PHYTER solution, can now provide exceptionally tight time synchronisation.
