IGBT power modules for electric vehicles

27 August 2014 Power Electronics / Power Management

Infineon Technologies has introduced a new generation of HybridPACK power modules for electric vehicle drives to follow up the worldwide deployment of the first two generations in quantities numbering several hundred thousand.

While HybridPACK 1 is designed for applications in power ranges up to 60 kW and HybridPACK 2 is rated up to 140 kW, the new HybridPACK Drive IGBT module slots right in between them with a power range of 50 – 100 kW. It comes in the form of a compact six-pack module (750 V / 660 A) and is designed primarily to serve as the key component for the main inverter in hybrid and electric vehicles.

This new generation offers multi-purpose power terminals and press-fit pins for the signal terminals, and its combination of low stray inductance and high blocking voltage allows for low switching losses, especially at inverter maximum ratings. Its direct liquid cooling concept, using a copper baseplate with pin-fin, results in excellent power density.

The new IGBT power modules are about 30% smaller for a given power than the HybridPACK 2. Ultra-low stray inductance of 10 nH enables systems with high efficiency by using fast-switching chipsets. The integration of additional features is simplified as the innovative signal pin assembly allows for flexibility in pin configuration.

The HybridPACK Drive uses a completely new mounting concept: instead of screw terminals, the modules are equipped with multifunction tabs for a fast welding process. For customers who want to use screw terminals, the flexible tabs can be prepared accordingly. Another improvement is the introduction of PressFIT technology, which ensures a highly reliable PCB assembly in only a few seconds. Compared with a selective soldering process, the process time is at least 10 to 20 times faster.
