Following the 2015 release of the S7 and S3 ARM Cortex-M4 families, Renesas Electronics has now added the S1 to its Synergy microcontroller (MCU) platform to address Internet of Things (IoT) applications, among others. Based on the Cortex-M0+ core, S1 becomes the most cost-effective member of the product range, and precedes the S5 family due to be unveiled this November.
The devices integrate 14-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADC), USB host capability, 12-bit digital-to-analog converters (DAC) and many more peripherals, with development made simple using the Synergy software package. They also include security functions such as a true random number generator and AES cryptography, safety self-test functions, a capacitive touch interface and a real-time clock.
Low-voltage operation down to 1,6 V, with extremely low-power operation modes and fast wake-up times of the CPU core and the analog/digital peripherals, make S1 series MCUs well suited for battery-operated sensing and control applications. Hardware acceleration through peripherals helps optimise CPU bandwidth and lower power consumption, giving more flexibility to manage events and data transfers.
