LED lighting for horticulture

31 January 2017 Opto-Electronics

New LED lighting components and kits have been introduced by RS Components that enable designers to create advanced products for boosting horticultural business performance.

The Petunia series by Intelligent LED Solutions (ILS) features LED modules that generate various combinations of warm white, hyper red and deep blue wavelengths to create optimal lighting for rapid growth of seedlings or vegetation, or for energy saving retail displays. The range includes all parts needed to build the complete lighting solution, including optimised lenses, constant-current LED drivers, heatsinks and thermal materials.

Starter kits available in five configurations help accelerate product development by bringing together the 12-LED module and lens, driver, heatsink, adaptor, screws, spacer and top cap as a ready-to-use package. The ILK-PETUNIA-01 and ILK-PETUNIA-01S starter kits for general illumination contain six warm white (3000K), five red and one blue LED. Also for general illumination, the ILK-PETUNIA-02 starter kit features a high-efficacy module containing nine hyper red and three deep blue LEDs.

To create lighting that accelerates the growth of leafy vegetation for increased yield, designers can choose the ILK-PETUNIA-03 kit containing an LED module with six blue and six red LEDs. The last kit, ILK-PETUNIA-04, features a board with nine blue and three red LEDs for promoting rapid growth of seedlings, recognising that younger plants respond well to predominantly blue wavelengths.

As an OSRAM certified partner, ILS uses the latest OSRAM Oslon SSL ThinGaN emitters in its LED modules. The emitters remain extremely efficient up to high drive currents and have low thermal resistance that promotes cool operation and high reliability.

The modules are optimised for use with LEDiL Petunia lenses, which were conceived for horticultural applications and feature a compact design making them ideal for use in greenhouses and retail fixtures. The lenses feature moulded pins that allow accurate and economical attachment to the module baseboard, and are manufactured in long lasting, optical grade polycarbonate to ensure a durable, high-quality end product.
