Guinnux extends vendor-specific support

17 May 2017 Computer/Embedded Technology

Keystone Electronic Solutions has made available its embedded Linux distribution, Guinnux, on NXP Semiconductors’ QorIQ LS1043A quad-core, 64-bit ARM-based processor for embedded networking and industrial infrastructure solutions. According to John Eigelaar, Keystone founder and Guinnux developer, the LS1043A reference design board is the perfect platform to port Keystone’s newly released Guinnux for Aarch64 onto, as Guinnux unlocks the true networking and protocol handling capabilities of the board which serves as a test bed for industrial IoT solutions.

“We had ported Guinnux to the Qemu Aarch64 VM, and wanted to try it on actual hardware,” Eigelaar explains. “We specifically chose the NXP platform because it is well suited for industrial IoT applications. Porting Guinnux to NXP is a true testament to Guinnux’s versatility when it comes to deployments onto vendor-specific platforms.”

In a similar vein, Keystone has also made Guinnux available as a rescue system image on Beagle Bone Black. The rescue file system allows Guinnux to be distributed as a small, versatile image, without necessitating the download of a large SD card image. The rescue file system allows users to recover or re-install a damaged or broken installation without the need to re-flash the complete SD card image.

Guinnux allows for further development of custom solutions on top of the base system. By using the Guinnux build system, developers are able to develop new embedded software in a way similar to proven Linux server application development. Eigelaar comments, “We ported our own Linux operating system, Guinnux, to the Beagle Bone Black to further demonstrate the versatility of the Guinnux distribution.”
