Switches for harsh environments

15 November 2017 Switches, Relays & Keypads

C&K’s range of switches includes a variety of models that are suited to rugged applications thanks to their long life of up to 1 million cycles, IP67/68 sealing for wet environments and temperature range of -40°C to +80°C. They feature superior haptics for positive switching feedback and come in various options for illumination and custom graphics.

The backlit industrial APB series pushbutton switches are SPST (single-pole, single-throw) momentary action devices, and are available in both a threaded version that features an IP67 panel seal and an IP65 snap-in version without a panel seal. In addition to the nine symbols offered as standard parts, C&K also offers a fully customisable painted and laser etched cap capability that allows it to recreate virtually any symbol on the 12 mm backlit caps of the switches. These switches are commonly used in applications located in poorly lit environments, which can make it difficult to identify individual switch function, so the backlit cap graphics will provide operators with a highly visible indication of what they’re activating before they turn it on.

The K12S series key switches include a version sealed to IP67 standards for use in outdoor applications such as automotive door locks, trunk openers, motorbike handles and other environments likely to encounter harsh conditions. An IP40 version of the switch is available for less demanding environments. C&K offers this series in DPST, dual-contact versions with a double-step actuation of 6/12 N. The design of the K12S series separates the electrical and mechanical functions of the switch,

The entire line of K12S key switches feature gold-plated, self-cleaning contacts with low contact resistance (<100 mΩ), 100 N overload resistance and life cycles of 1 million. The switches’ low PCB-mounted profile makes them ideal for mechatronics design engineers to integrate into complex subassemblies requiring precise control for joysticks, remote controls, vehicle cabins and forklift/crane controls. In the DPST configuration, the K12S series meets safety requirements for demanding applications in medical, military, avionics or industrial equipment.

In the PNP series of sealed pushbutton switches, designers of transportation, industrial controls, test equipment and automation applications have access to a high-quality, extremely durable switch series for their control grips, joysticks, off-road panels, hydraulics, power control panels, heavy equipment, industrial instruments, lifts, conveyor controls and other applications.

PNP series switches are IP68 sealed to endure harsh environments and power wash down. They are available in multiple housing styles and feature an extended operating life of 1 million cycles. The PNP series combines the same rugged switch performance and 5 A power capabilities of C&K’s NP series switches with the affordability of its AP series – and features a thermoplastic housing design.
