Expanding Turkish manufacturing sector covets SA market

13 November 2013 News

As if local competition wasn't stiff enough, South African manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment may soon be facing an influx of products from Turkey. A delegation from that country’s rapidly growing electronics, electrical and cabling sector travelled to our shores in October in search of potential importers, distributors, agents, retailers and wholesalers for their products.

Representatives from 15 Turkish companies attended meetings in Sandton organised by the Istanbul Electrical–Electronics, Machinery and Information Technology Exporter’s Association (TET). These companies included transformer manufacturers, a specialist in energy storage technologies, several cable manufacturers, a maker of transformers, switches and capacitors, manufacturers of distributor and automation panels, a designer and manufacturer of FM and TV broadcasting equipment, a manufacturer of commercial and consumer lighting fixtures and components, and a global producer of white and brown goods.

According to Mr. Fatih Kemal Ebiclioglu, president of the TET, Turkey’s electrical, electronics and IT sectors have realised record growth in recent years, with total global exports now exceeding $12 billion. A joint economic committee is in place between South Africa and Turkey; bilateral trade volume between the countries reached approximately $1,6 billion in 2012.
