New president illuminates IESSA’s future

The Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA), which represents the South African lighting industry, has a new president at the helm of a newly elected council.
Under this new leadership, the association will look to modernise itself so as to help its members tackle new challenges and take advantage of new opportunities in the highly dynamic and competitive lighting sector.

According to the new president, Natasha Nel-Sakharova, whose tenure runs for two years, the council’s vision for IESSA’s future became clear during its annual congress held at the Cape St. Francis resort during May this year. Although the nine team members are relatively new to the council, their levels of experience range from young professionals to established specialists and retired fellows.
In addition to supporting the practical implementation of internationally recognised lighting practices, the association represents South Africa by serving as the national committee of the Commission International
De L'Eclairage (CIE) – the International Commission on Illumination. It also regularly conducts training courses, mainly in the Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town areas, for which it is CPD accredited.
According to Nel-Sakharova, IESSA’s goals for the foreseeable future include an overhaul of its website ( www.iessa.org.za) to improve members’ access to resources and to embrace an expanded geographic footprint. This is in addition to plans to enhance many other vital aspects of its remit, and its pending ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) registration. “We look forward to expanding our communication with members through the various media, strengthened liaison with similar associations, improved access to and guidance in applying local and international lighting standards, increased and more varied membership, and further entrenchment of corporate governance principles,” she stated.
