Dual DC-DC converter family

4 June 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Designers of battery-powered equipment such as PDAs and laptops, require ever increasing levels of power efficiency to lengthen battery operating time. In response to this demand, Torex Semiconductor has unveiled the new XC950x family of dual DC-DC converters that provide stable output over a wide range of voltages. To ensure the highest power efficiency, each of the two converters' phase shifts 180° at the same frequency.

In all, the XC950x family comprises six series of devices: the step-up, step-up XC9501; the step-up, step-down XC9502; the step-down, step-down XC9503; the XC9505 with step-down and inverting output; and two devices with step-up and inverting output, the XC9504 and XC9506. All except the XC9506 employ a 0,09 V internal voltage reference. The XC9506 will accept an external voltage reference allowing designers to change the output by changing the external reference. Connecting the device's Vref pin to a DAC provides an excellent means of controlling an LCD bias voltage with ambient temperature.

Input voltage range is from 0,9 V to 10 V. Using externally-connected components, output voltage can be set up freely from 1,5 to 30 V. The new converters' 180 kHz switching frequency allows the size of external components to be greatly reduced thus saving valuable board space.

Using external signals the XC950x can be switched between PWM control and PWM/PFM automatic switching control. On selecting automatic switching control, control switches from PWM to PFM during periods of light load operating enabling the device to operate extremely efficiently across the full spectrum from light loads to large output currents.

On stand-by, current consumption reduces to a maximum of 3 µA. Soft-start time is internally set to 10 ms to protect against inrush current when the power is switched on and also to protect against voltage overshoot. The dual DC-DC converter series is available in a compact MSOP-10 package and also in a new 2,6 x 2,4 x 0,65 mm USP-10 chip scale package.
