Tiny battery fuel gauge integrates with safety circuitry

4 June 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Dallas Semiconductor is offering a multichemistry fuel gauge device that integrates precise current, voltage, and temperature measurements; nonvolatile (NV) data storage, and an optional 25 mΩ sense resistor into a tiny 8-pin TSSOP package.

The DS2751 is ideal for use in the battery packs of handheld devices where space is at a premium. With a minimum package dimension of 3 mm, it can be mounted on the side of thin Li+ and Li-polymer prismatic cells.

Its versatility allows it to directly monitor either 1-cell Li+/polymer or 3-cell NiMH battery packs. Using its optional internal 25 mΩ sense resistor, the DS2751 can measure continuous currents from 625 µA to as high as ±1,9 A. An external filtering capacitor allows peak currents of higher values to be integrated in the current-accumulation (fuel-gauging) measurement. Using an external sense resistor of another value, the current measurement range can be easily modified. All measured data is stored in on-chip EEPROM or SRAM memory and is reported to the host through its 1-Wire communication interface.
